The Colorado Education Initiative highlighted our school for its outstanding health and wellness programming. The video shadows a student in our school to show how fitness and health are top priorities at the middle school.

the connection between student learning and health and wellness you can't one without the other so you know if you think about kids who are living in poverty kids that come to school hungry kids that are feeling unsafe everything I know about the psychology of learning is that those things interfere with the kids ability to learn I'm going to Health and Wellness in students is as important or more important than the academic side  I hit up and I come to school and I bet fish hear  half our students and come to us are on free and reduced lunch and so for us to be able to I'd a good healthy lunch and breakfast is essential when our kids are well rested their healthy they get exercise they eat well that they perform better in a learning environment and they're happier to be there turn math fish. Say louder if I give them a quick little break I found more jumping jacks sweetie push-up contests they get rejuvenated and then they can come back and attend to the learning tell me because it might be too hard and I have to get my energy back  awesome math class I go to PE we went through a whole redesign of time at our elementary school to more freight daily physical fitness for all of our elementary children and is been wildly successful discipline has dropped dramatically office referrals have dropped percent at the elementary school  all of our middle school kids and now Oliver Elementary didn't have health so we actually teach the Comprehensive Health standards with Fidelity we try to have recess of strategic times we try to break up the day so that there are opportunities for them to move and to engage in non-academic learning  I appreciate that my children are learning that their activities that will help you be able to think more clearly help you feel better and to learn those skills as you go through school so they can carry on into adulthood is very important I think heading better than them and doing stuff if you can create a fun culture a fun environment and engaging more active environment students are just going to be more attentive the learning  my name is the kids when they walk into my classroom they're eager to come in there ready to learn if they feel good about themselves they know we're also there and we're carrying about them as a whole student as a whole child the culture here at the middle school based on just the positive vibe that you feel in the school I see it really as an investment a long-term investment in the future of your schools Ramona's is to measure it and so we build that into our unified Improvement plan so that I think sets of value or a tone in the building that we what we value  I am not only Built better relationships with kids in the past couple years with our new policies I have seen huge academic I mean the average fifth grade growth is about 8 points and my average gross for my 5th graders this year was almost 12 points so if we look at the beta every piece of feedback that we have gotten has been incredibly positive whatever the the data tells us it's it's reinforced by real-world conversations it's too much fun because we get to go like Tupac and cuz of all the different activities we have done class times it's pretty fun to be here I'm now hearing the parents thing you know this whole student approach to our kids is really helping tell my child comes home and talks about what they had for lunch and they liked it and that is healthy and they're trying to influence how we eat at home that to me is a real plane that we are impacting beyond our students were actually impacting our families in our communities
