Hello WFA students,

I am really looking forward to meeting you soon.  Thanks for enrolling in the Wilderness First Aid Class taught by NOLS Wilderness Medicine on May 18-19. I wanted to provide some details for our wilderness medicine course.

LOCATION
Our course will be located at the Pagosa Springs Middle School Library- 309 LEWIS STREET, PO BOX 1498, PAGOSA SPRINGS, CO 81147

PARKING

Street parking is available right next to the school on Lewis street.  For those new to the facility, please enter the building from the playground and courts area.

CLASS TIMES
Please plan to arrive at 7:45 AM on the first day to register and get oriented to the space.  Class will begin at 8am each morning and end at right around 5pm.  We will have a few short breaks throughout the day and an hour lunch break at about noon.

COURSE OVERVIEWThis is a 16 hour course over two days.  In order to cover all of our curriculum, our days move pretty quickly and the pace is steady.  Please bring water, snacks, and appropriate gear and clothing to be outside for 25-30% of the class in varied weather conditions. You are also welcome to bring a camp chair and comfy shoes for our indoor time if you would like.  Please make sure to wear clothing that can sustain possible stains from moulage makeup that we often use in scenarios. There is not a test at the end of the course unless you are recertifying your Wilderness First Responder.

CERTIFICATION
Upon completion, you will receive 2 certifications, WFA and Epinephrine Auto-Injector.

ILLNESS
If you do not feel well on either morning of the course, please email me and refrain from coming to class.

PPE/BSI
As a medical class, we will be wearing PPE including gloves, mask, sunglasses and raincoats during our up close and personal practice sessions as we work toward Body Substance Isolation practices.  NOLS will provide KN-95 masks and nitrile gloves for your use as needed.  Please bring glasses and rain gear to learn how to improvise PPE.

During the learning times when we are NOT conducting patient care, you may choose whether you would like to wear PPE based on your personal desires.

WFR recertification only
If you are recertifying your Wilderness First Responder through this course, please let us know so we can be better prepared for your needs.  We will also need a copy of your NOLS WFR card in order to recert your card. If you received your certification from another organization, you will need to communicate with them about recertification options through the use of this course.

You may also want to review the www.NOLS.edu website under wilderness medicine resources where you can find updates and information that will help you with your recertification test.

Attached is a form for your review.  We will have a copy for you to sign upon arrival.

Finally, if you would like to get a jump start on course material HERE is a video link for you to take a quick look at.

Please let me know if you have any questions and see you soon!--

Warm Regards,
